Welcome to my blog!

Hi there!

This blog is related to my autobiography DMD Life art and me plus there will be non related posts. I have the disease Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and that has left me in a near paralyzed state, I wrote this book in 10 months using one finger clicking one mouse button on one on screen keyboard! Be a follower by clicking in the box on the right and you'll get every new post I make. Feel free to join in with your comments and enjoy!

Communication is even more vital

Communication is even more vital for those with DMD especially staying in touch. Every month I need my mini tracheotomy changed which is because the manufacturers recommend it and at the end of that time my chest usually suffers a little. Organizing this change usually takes place via email or the phone and it usually goes fine without any problems. However this didn't occur during my most recent tracheotomy change, I emailed them as per normal but after days there was no reply. So I had a very rude awakening yesterday as I was told my tracheotomy was being changed in 30mins this was at eleven a.m. late for many but with my sleeping hours that was really early! I was tired and my mother had to quickly rush me out of bed and get me ready and we just made it. Phew! I wasn't expecting a day of coughing and a tracheotomy change that day. It's nothing major but a simple reply would have saved my mother a rush and I could have got prepared. Surprises and Duchenne's don't often mix!

Foreword

I’m Ian Griffiths from South Wales. This book is a story of my life so far up to the age of twenty five years. I live with and suffer from the ill effects of DMD which stands for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It is a severe muscle wasting disease and a life limiting terminal illness. It won’t kill you in six months in the traditional sense of ‘terminal’, but it’s far crueller than that, it steals every muscle in your body first and then kills you, anywhere up to the age of thirty. There have been cases of men living past that into their forties and fifties but only with drastic interventions such as ventilators and tracheotomies, more on this can be found by reading on.
I hope to cover a few things in this book, from a history of my childhood years to a more detailed history from sixteen years onwards and finally onto my current problems and triumphs. At times things I write may make you smile or may make you pause and think about the seriousness of life with this devastating disease. I really hope there will be a cure but currently for us supposedly ‘older’ guys with DMD (over twenty one), there seems very little hope. If I don’t see a cure in my lifetime, I hope my campaigning helps in some way bring it about for future generations, so another child won’t have to see their body wither and die before their time

The small things

Every time I need my finger nails cut it is always a daunting time. With my hands all mangled up because of severe contractures it's impossible to straighten my fingers so cutting is a challenge. My mother has to force my fingers into a place where my nails can be cut. A good bit of advice for those in a similar position is to buy a special nail cutting scissors. They have kinked and shortened blades that help get in those awkward gaps. I've had a few incidents of cutting too close to the quick and drawing blood which makes my whole finger throb in a little pain. This is unavoidable as my hands really are twisted up. You never hear about nail cutting in a DMD textbook! The amount of freedom my hands have after my nails are cut is really liberating as I can use my mouse so much easier and create more artworks.

Read more about the things taken for granted in my book DMD LIFE ART & ME!

Sacrifices you make

This isn't primarily about me but there are definitely sacrifices you make living with DMD. You must gradually put up with a certain loss of dignity living with DMD that's certainly true. Initially it starts with being dressed by someone else then relying on others just to use the bathroom and then help from others to do anything and even to stay alive. It's great to learn how to work with others but for the whole of your life it can be relentless but positivity and a certain can do attitude will get you through it! Many have sacrificed ever having relationships because of their current situations be it stuck in an institution, living at home or constantly messing relationships up (my problem) or even just never getting the opportunity. Totally understandably this can be devastating to those living with DMD it's very hard and I have been there myself. DMD gets in the way a lot when dating and that can make it that bit harder anyway. Too often dwelling on these shortcomings and the lack of relationships can lead to depression and on top of everything this can push people over the edge. There's a way to cope however and that is dwelling on a goal, we each need to find a goal that works for us or maybe a better one may be shown to you.

Read my ups and downs regarding the above topics in my book DMD LIFE ART & ME!

Why I do it...

All being well this Sunday I will be featured in a local Newspaper article. It has information on DMD, it has an interview with me and information on my book You can look out for it in the Wales on Sunday paper or go to the media Wales website to see it. I hope it helps in one thing that I am quite interested in that being awareness. That was one of the core aims for my book, because not many 25-year-olds (as I was at the time) write autobiographies. Hopefully people reading my book, especially those who do not know about Duchenne's will ask themselves why so young? After all I am no a celebrity and neither do I want to be one. I am hoping that they would see how much of a totally devastating disease DMD is and can see why time was so pressing.

Extract;
.... I’m such a positive person that giving up and dying never entered my mind at all. The next thing I did was to write on a pad of paper my mother held under my arm. In an emotionally charged moment and through many tears I scrawled in black ink “I’m too Young to Die”.....

Read all about the above story in my book DMD LIFE ART & ME!

DMD logistics

DMD is a bit like a battlefront in many ways and just like a front line needs good supply lines so does a life with Duchenne's. A case in point would be my suction catheters. I've run really low on them lately after numerous attempts to have some ordered they seemed never to be ordered. Thankfully I finally found out they have now been ordered. It got me thinking about all the supplies that one needs when living with DMD. In the beginning there's relatively few supplies needed just electric wheelchairs and the like. Now as an older man with DMD there are many supplies needed such as catheters, tracheotomy neck tapes, tracheotomy tubes, ventilator tubes and connectors, wheelchair supplies and medications! There are probably more but as you can see it's vital the supply lines stay open because without them life would be impossible.

Extract;

...Under the third shelf lie the rest of my large medical supplies such as boxes of suction catheters and a box of Tena pads used to cover my bed and wheelchair. Only recently do I store my mobile hoist by the window,
it creates a better space in our living room (where it used to reside)...

Read more about these vital supply lines in my book DMD LIFE ART & ME!

Modern day machines

I've had my new hoist installed as recently as last Friday but there continues to be a mystery problem. The fuses in the transformer keep blowing after 2 attempts to fix the problems we're none the wiser. It all reminds me of a stressful period I had when my through floor lift. When it was replaced it took 3 months and a temporary lift that battered my elbows before it was installed and ready. Hopefully this won't be the case this time. They really don't build things to last these days but you gotta work with what you have. It's so important to have these machines, it's amazing because fifty years ago who would have dreamed of a ceiling hoist so here's to it being fixed!

Extract from the chapter the lift debacle
...The week ended in total despair and panic as we were told something awful. A council representative dealing with our lift renewal informed us that the lift company had pulled out. Apparently it was too difficult of a job for them so they gave up; leaving me literally high and dry!...

Dream

Available in PAPERBACK and EBOOK versions

I have some pretty weird dreams but last nights was really bizarre. It all started when for some reason I was in America. I was talking to another man with DMD and he had found this special formula that could help someone with DMD. Somehow I was convinced to try it and for months it doesn't do anything. I got frustrated that it was doing nothing but as I was getting angry my arms started moving and I could suddenly walk! I was incredulous at this. The next few days were bliss but suddenly the other man with DMD disappeared and along with him went the formula. That meant I ended up back the way I was. I didn't give up though and my dream turned detective in it's style as I worked out what the formula was. I found out after some bizarre journeys and a meeting with a powerful man that it was nectar from a flower. I formulated it with other natural ingredients but I woke up before I could tell if I could walk again.

I definitely have not given up on a cure as you can see from my subconscious but it certainly wasn't a man made genetic altering medication that could have untold side effects it was all natural. I didn't remember the name of the flower after all that!

Extract;
... I’d love to make my parents a cup of tea but boiling a kettle and pouring the liquid out is an impossible dream at the moment.....

Here's to impossible dreams coming true. I dream quite a lot and my book is full of them, find out more in DMD LIFE ART & ME!

What does that feel like?

Recently my newer once weekly carers have been trained to clear my chest of mucus using a suction machine. They often ask what does suction feel like because having catheters put into your windpipe certainly isn't natural! It's so hard to describe because if done properly it doesn't really feel of anything. On the very rare occasion I've had really painful experiences too. On the odd occasion I'll get a defective catheter with a severe bend at the end which you can't always see until it is too late. That feels like running a dagger down your windpipe certainly an ouch moment that causes spluttering fits in my chest. I go into more detail in my book, here's a little taster......

Extract;
 ....if my chest isn’t sucked out the mucus builds up and can block my airway all together. When the suction catheter is fed down it feels like another kind of blockage but it doesn’t generally hurt. When suction is engaged I get a certain amount of relief as the secretions are removed it’s as if someone turned my air back on again.....

Duchenne or Duchenne's

Available in EBOOK and PAPERBACK versions

A nurse told me once to say Duchenne's instead of Duchenne, at first it felt strange to be told how to say my own disease but she had a point. Saying Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is fine but many of us including me reduce it to Duchenne. Some people say 'Let's eradicate Duchenne' or words to that extent. In France there are many families with the surname Duchenne. They may feel a little perturbed at being eradicated. It's probably better to say Duchenne's because then it better describes the disease and not a person. That disease truly will be eradicated!!!!!

A side note, Duchenne's is pronounced Do-shen's :)

Extract;
...Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a rare (approx. 1 in 3500 births in the UK) severe terminal muscle wasting genetic disease that gradually kills all the body’s muscle cells....

Read more about Duchenne's and what that diagnosis really means in my book DMD LIFE ART & ME!

Slings!

Available in EBOOK and PAPERBACK versions

I still have one working hoist in my bedroom which is a huge mercy. These hoists come with a variety of slings that support the users. I have grey slings that really work well for me but after they are swapped (I have two) every so often I end up in some comical positions. Yesterday was the same, sometimes this gives me pain but I persevere until sleeping time when I can comfortably rest in my bed. The next day I get my mom to alter the sling and it brings amazing relief! Positioning is one of the biggest issues with DMD once full time wheelchair use is established. Carers willing to help you get comfortable are vital.

Extract
...Two of the carers helped put my hoist sling on. They would lean me forward and shove the fabric sling down my back. Next my legs would be individually raised and the corresponding ‘leg’ parts pushed under. The hoist would be rolled over and the sling straps hooked on to the metal crossbar dangling above my head...

If I don’t see a cure in my lifetime, I hope my campaigning helps in some way bring it about for future generations, so another child won’t have to see their body wither and die before their time.

Making adjustments

Available in EBOOK and PAPERBACK versions

It's always difficult to watch my family eat different things to me because I need to eat pureed food. So it's fantastic when my mum makes something we can all eat obviously there are adjustments for me. For instance tonight we had cottage pie, the main ingredients were all pureed and I had ready made mash. It was amazing and inclusive. It's always empowering to do something everyone else can.

Extract;
...Eventually she referred me to a lovely new local dietician, who immediately put me
on food supplements (both milk based) and boosted the types of pureed food I could have (namely by adding cheese, milk and thickeners to my food) ...  this worked and I regained three stone over the coming year...

Above was the first time I ate pureed food, I was 6 stone at the time which was dangerously thin but I went back to 9 stone. So I'm incredibly grateful for the food I do get but being included is the metaphoric cherry on top. Read more about how I'm included in family life in my book DMD LIFE ART & ME!

Just quite right

Available in EBOOK and PAPERBACK versions

I love getting the perfect equipment for my needs. I've had a V shaped pillow for about 10 years and I loved how comfortable it felt. Sadly it was looking the worse for wear and I had to buy a new one. It's difficult to let go of something really comfortable. It's very rare to find perfect DMD equipment so letting go is hard.

Extract
...I soon got comfortable in this new chair but I was so fed up with the constant equipment entering my life all the time. Just when I had gotten used to a piece of equipment I was measured up for a new item...

When I was a young child I was so very resistant but now if I really must do something then I will. Happily I've found another perfect V shaped pillow which is comfortable and awesome! Read more about the changes in my life in my book DMD LIFE ART & ME!

Ventilator trials

Available in EBOOK and PAPERBACK versions

Last night the temporary ventilator I was using whilst mine is serviced just wasn't working right, not delivering me the correct amount of air. I thought I was suffocating so I had to use my daytime ventilator. All this happening at 3 AM. Trying to alter the settings took an age but mum & I figured it out in the end. Nevermind a touch screen phone, a touch screen ventilator is the way to go!

Extract;
...I have quickly gone from roughly ten hours at night and three hours in the day to [twenty] hours per day on my ventilator....

I always remember to be thankful for these ventilators as they've been helping keep me alive for the last 11 years. Read more about my ventilators in my book DMD LIFE ART & ME!
